A Brief History of Saint Benedict Monastery, Bristow ,Virginia

COMMUNITY LOGO

The logo of the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia was designed for the 125th anniversary of the community's founding in 1868. It is based on the medal of Saint Benedict which is common to the Benedictine Order throughout the world. In the angles formed by the arms of the Cross are the letters C.S.P.B. which signify Cross of Holy Father Benedict.

In 1901, the motherhouse was transferred from Richmond to Bristow under the guidance of Mother Edith Vogel, who succumbed to pneumonia on January 21, 1903. Four days later, her sister, Sister Clara M. Vogel, died of the same disease. These two beloved pioneers were the first to be buried in "God's Acre" as the cemetery is called. A large memorial stone cross commemorates 18 other sisters who are laid to rest in Holy Cross Cemetery in Richmond.
