Bob and Barbara Mechler
As part of the monastery family, Bob and Barbara helped Sister Laurence and then Sister Louise decorate the Chapel each Easter and Christmas. They served on the Northern Virginia Campaign Committee to help the sisters raise $3 million for a new monastery home, and made a generous gift of their own. Bob has volunteered as a teacher with BEACON, the sisters’ adult literacy minis-try, and served terms with BEACON’s and Linton Hall School’s boards.
“The concept of a Columbarium as a ministry of the sisters was not only Bob’s idea but he worked diligently on all aspects of the project,” said Mary Finnigan, Chief Operating Officer for the sisters. “His hard work was critical in making the Place of Peace Columbarium a reality.”
“It’s become a wonderful ministry,” Bob says. “We’re very proud of it.”
The Mechlers now live in Winchester, VA, but still attend Mass one Sunday a month to worship with and spend time with the sisters.
Reflecting on the close relationship they share with the sisters, Barbara says, “Whenever we have a celebration we want them to celebrate with us. When we moved, nineteen of the sisters drove an hour out to Winchester to bless our little cottage. It meant so much.”
Bob adds, “One of the sisters’ hallmarks is hospitality, and they are the most hospitable and friendly and welcoming people. Even if you are not Catholic you would be welcome in their house.”
A tranquil oasis surrounded by busy suburban neighborhoods, the Saint Benedict Monastery’s grounds are open daily to all in the community to walk and discover our lush gardens, woodlands, gentle trails, and tucked-away spaces that encourage reflection, restore the spirit, and lift the heart.
As an extension to our Place of Peace, the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia are establishing a beautiful new prayer garden, lovingly dedicated to our own Sister Andrea Verchuck, which will be located on the site of the former monastery building.
A friend of the Sisters has generously donated $100,000.00 to the Peace in Our Backyard campaign as a matching gift challenge! All donations received will be counted toward this challenge, doubling each donor’s gift!
